Modi positions himself as merchant of change for much vilified trading community

hen Narendra Modi talks about simplifying procedures for traders, through forms for instance, he offers himself – and his party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) – as a merchant of change. The political rhetoric of this idea reverberates deep in the heart of every trader and strikes an emotive and transformative chord.
Modi used that chord to sing a business melody for traders, peppered with words like trust and faith. By lauding them for being first in the line of the revenue cycle, from consumers to the government through manufacturers, he gave them a dignity that has been missing in the past few decades as the profession of trade deteriorated to being one of exploiting, cheating parasites on society.
